Larry Gordley is widely recognized as a leading expert in the field of atmospheric remote sensing and instrument design. Over the past thirty years, Mr. Gordley has played key roles in many prominent and successful NASA atmospheric remote sensing missions.

After receiving his B.S. and M.S. in Physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Mr. Gordley began his career working on several remote sensing projects at NASA Langley Research Center. In 1986, he founded GATS, and led teams supporting the LIMS, CLAES, and HALOE missions. His design work for these and other instruments has led to some of the most precise and robust satellite sensors for measuring and monitoring the Earth’s atmosphere. In addition, his early work on radiative transfer algorithms is still being used by NASA in a number of satellite missions, and forms the heart of the SpectralCalc website, used by thousands of scientists and teachers worldwide.

Most recently, Larry was the instrument Principal Investigator for SOFIE, and led the instrument design for SABER. Both of these instruments continue operating in orbit and are leading to important scientific advances. His careful attention to detail and insightful leadership has contributed to the success of these and every mission in which he has had a significant role. He has authored many papers and holds a number of patents, and continues to play an active role in the atmospheric science and remote sensing communities.
